On this page, It will go through the different types of communication protocols and what they do. It will also briefly talk about standards.
The Importance of Standards for Communicating
Standards are greatly important as they program languages, program operating systems, data formats and of course, communication protocols. There is another reason why they are important and that reason is because they allow different manufacturers to customize a computer system. Without standards, hardware and software parts of a computer from the same manufacturer may only be used and if you were to try and use a different hardware or software, it wouldn't exactly work.
What Is A Communication Protocol?

A communication protocol is a set of digital messages that are formats and rules. These are required to exchange messages in or between computing systems and it is also required in telecommunications.

Wireless Security Protocols
|
Wireless Security Protocols - Prevention of unauthorized access or damage to computers using wireless security. Take a school for example. Schools use Sophos software that monitors the computers usage and it also blocks any unwanted viruses that could potentially harm the computers. It has protocols like WEP, which is short for Wired Equivalent Privacy. This provides the same level of security as wired networks. There is also WPA, which stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access and this was introduced as an interim security enhancement whilst they were working on something else. Last but not least, there is WPA 2, which is basically Wi-Fi Protected Access Version 2. This is used by U.S Government for them to be able to encrypt information.

IrDA (Infrared Data Association)

IrDA - This is short for Infrared Data Association, which is an industry driven interest group and has a complete set of protocols for wireless communication. It is the same technology that is used for TV remotes and RC Cars.

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)
|
This protocol allows the computer to access information on a handheld device without having to worry about the size of the webpage and without having to scroll up and down and left to right.

Bluetooth
|
With Bluetooth, there are quite a few protocols that Bluetooth has and some of them I will happily explain. There is the Link Management Protocol that controls the link between two devices and handling matters like link establishment. There is also the Bluetooth Network Encapsulation Protocol (BNEP). This protocol is used by Personal Area Networks (PAN).

Cellular Radio

Cellular Radio - This is known to be the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). This uses a different set of frequencies, in which the cell corresponds to the area that is covered by a single transmitter.

GSM/UMTS
802.11802.11 - Applies to wireless LAN's and can use transmissions over small lengths. This uses a specific Ethernet Protocol and does happen to use CSMA/CA, which stands for Carner Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance. This CSMA/CA is used to create a path for sharing. Previous models of 802.11 would have a phase shift key (PSK) but now it has a complementary code keying (CCK).

GSM/UMTS - UMTS stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System and this is based on a GSM standard. Here are some protocols that belong to the UMTS family. AMR, which is known as Adaptive Multi-Rate. This is basically a speech decoder that works for devices that have 3G (Third Generation) in them. The BCC is known as the Broadcast Call Control, which can be used by a video group voice chat or as some like to call it, a video conference. The BMC is the Broadcast Multicast Control, this can store Cell Broadcast Messages and can schedule BMC messages.
